In The Press – 1950’s

Picture Post – March 27th, 1954 Edition

A great ‘find’ courtesy of a very kind gift from Sharon Kynaston, who contacted the website when she discovered an original copy of the Picture Post (March 27th, 1954 edition).

Picture Post was a prominent photo-journalistic magazine published in the United Kingdom from 1938 to 1957. It is considered a pioneering example of photo-journalism and was an immediate success, selling 1,700,000 copies a week after only two months. It has been called the Life magazine of the United Kingdom.

This is the very first press article to feature Ian Hendry, written whilst he was still a drama student at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, based then in rooms at the Royal Albert Hall. Photographs courtesy of Kurt Hutton and article by Robert Muller. Robert Muller went on to write for Ian, most memorably in Afternoon of A Nymph (1962) where he met and starred with his future wife-to-be, Janet Munro.

Originally the Central School of Speech and Drama feature had been ear-marked as the cover story. Then Elizabeth Taylor appeared on the scene at the last minute with an exclusive on her latest film. Beau Brummell.

The cover picture of Taylor is, however, superb and we think she can be forgiven for stealing part of the show!
